Health And Social Care

Abbeyfield Society

A residential home for older people in South Parade, Northallerton.  Volunteers can help a t social events and on their Management Team.   

Alzheimer’s Society

Alzheimer’s Disease can affect anybody and help is always needed at the Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre, held every Saturday at Oak Mount.  Volunteers are needed between 10am and 3pm and you can stay for an hour or two or all day if you prefer.  It is a lively and happy atmosphere and would suit anyone interested in health care.

Breathing Space

Breathing Space is a charity for people with learning disabilities.  Their aim is to enable people with learning disabilities who are over the age of 18 to develop their ability to pursue leisure activities.  There is a monthly timetable of activities, so please ask the Volunteer Centre for a copy; it includes everything from bowling evenings to pub meals and quizzes.  Volunteers are needed to assist with these social outings and to maintain their minibus.  Activities are mainly in the evening.

Red Cross

You don’t have to be a doctor to save someone’s life. Working as part of small team you will be trained to treat a wide range of injuries at events in your local community or across Yorkshire.  These could be local fetes, concerts, sporting events or large commercial events.

Home From Hospital Scheme  - Red Cross

Volunteers’ help patients return home after a stay in hospital.  This can involve liaising with hospital staff, assessing how the patient is coping at home and helping with shopping etc. Time is flexible to match your requirements.

Hambleton & Richmondshire Hire Advocacy

Volunteer advocates work one to one with the person requiring support.  They support the person throughout the period they are needed and collate information, go to meetings, write letters, make telephone calls, deal with bureaucracy and take forward that person’s rights and choices.  Advocates often gain a great deal of knowledge for themselves and enjoy the challenges with which they are faced.Â

Mental Health Support In Hambleton And Richmondshire

Would you like to help people with mental health problems? If so this may be the organisation for you. There are many opportunities for befrienders, drivers and helpers.
Hambleton Strollers

Do you enjoy walking?  If so people are required to lead walks from venues in Northallerton.  Training will be provided. The Strollers provide short walks of under one hour to help those who need regular exercise.

St John’s Ambulance Service

Volunteers are wanted to train in first aid to assist at various events and functions throughout the area.  Training will be provided of course and it could be a great way to meet new people.

Skin Camouflage And Therapeutic Care Service

The Red Cross is looking for volunteers who can provide a skin camouflage service to show clients how to hide or mask disfiguring blemishes, scars, birthmarks to help them gain confidence. The therapeutic care service offers relaxing hand, neck and shoulder massage (through clothing} to promote well-being and aid relaxation.  This service is provided in Northallerton

Northallerton Community Visiting Scheme

There are many lonely and isolated people living in our area that would appreciate your help. If you have an hour or two to give each week you can help these people to live independently in their own homes.  This may be just sitting with a person and bringing in some outside news or helping with shopping.

MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE ASSOCIATION
Are you a good listener, caring and practical?  If so the Motor Neurone Disease Association would like to hear from you as they are seeking volunteers to train as Association Visitors to work as part of a local team offering caring, practical support to people with Motor Neurone Disease and their families.

HOSPICE HOMECARE
Would you like to help people with life threatening diseases living at home?  If so Hospice Homecare may be able to help.  They are looking for volunteers to provide company or to organise fund raising events. You will need to have caring skills and be able to attend a one-day induction course that is usually held on a Saturday.

NORTHALLERTON & VILLAGES CARER’S SITTING SERVICE
Could you spare a couple of hours to provide a well earned break for a carer looking after a dependant relative or friend at home?  If so we will provide you with support and training to enable you to offer this valuable service.

DALES CARE AT BEDALE
If you are friendly and enjoy the company of older people we would love to meet you.  Dales Care is looking for volunteers from all walks of life to help with a variety of tasks within this friendly day centre.   The centre is based in Bedale and you can really help to brighten an older person’s day.

FRIENDS OF THE FRIARAGE HOSPITALÂ
We are looking for volunteers to help with our shop and trolley service. The shop is open for several hours each day and the trolley provides newspapers and essential items for those people who are unable to leave the ward.

PATIENT ESCORTS FOR OUT-PATIENTS
Have you got a few hours to spare on a weekday to assist in the Out—Patients department at the Friarage Hospital? The role involves showing people to the relevant consulting rooms and taking along patient notes.  If so the Red Cross would love to hear from you.

WRVS - WOMAN’S ROYAL VOLUNTARY SER VICE.
Not just for women!  The WRVS offers many opportunities for volunteering such as working as a driver or escort for the Meals on Wheels Service or Books for the Housebound or perhaps helping at a luncheon club.  No formal skills or qualifications necessary, just your time.

THE MOWBRAY GATEWAY CLUB
The Mowbray Gateway Club is a social group for people with learning disabilities over the age of 15.  Activities range from line dancing to karaoke, baking cakes to flying kites.  Volunteers are needed to help run activities, provide friendship and conversation.  The club is on a Friday evening between 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

THE MENCAP SATURDAY DROP IN
The drop in meets alternate Saturdays at The Mencap Centre, Northallerton from 10 am to 3.30 pm.  It provides leisure and social contact for young people and adults with learning disabilities.  There is a range of activities at the Centre, including a pool table, computer, play station and karaoke.  Occasionally, the group visit theatres, leisure centres etc.

HERRIOT HOSPICE HOMECARE
Our organisation provides people wit

h life limiting illness the opportunity to remain in their home for as long as possible by providing a dedicated team of palliative care workers and trained volunteers who provide support for the them and their carers.  Volunteer tasks include fundraising, helping to distribute posters and tickets and helping patients in their own home.

SAMARITANS
Could you after completing a training course help people to deal with an emotional crisis?  If so then the Samaritans may be the organisation of interest to you.  They hold a selection/information day before accepting volunteers and you will work with a mentor for a period of time. Opportunities are available 24 hours a day, 52 weeks of the year!

 

UNITE
Volunteers are needed to train as mediators to deliver a professional and high quality service in Hambleton. Good communication skills are essential and you will work as part of a team.  You will need to undertake a 48-hour free training programme in mediation skills and candidates who successfully pass the course will be required to volunteer for a minimum period of 6 months.  Volunteers must be aged 18 or over.
ST JOHN AMBULANCE – FIRST AIDERS
Our volunteers are expertly trained in first aid to treat injuries ranging from headaches to heart attacks; they then use these skills to provide first aid treatment at a wide variety of public events. Volunteers often arrange further medical assistance and transport for patients, or provide comfort and rest to people in need of more prolonged care.  Volunteers must be over 18 years; volunteers under this age can join the Cadets.
ST JOHN CADETS
At St. John Ambulance you could take part in the following activities and many more! Outdoor and sporting activities, regular camping trip, help at events such as music concerts and football matches and participate in competitions and international events for young people aged 10 to 18 years old
